The issue of a possible charge for paper bills has led to competing interests between phone companies who encourage customers to switch to digital bills, and Australians who can’t afford internet access.

Digital Finance Analyst Martin North says 2.5 million households could be disadvantaged by paper billing fees, which mainly includes those with no internet access or the skills to do so.

The Consumer Law and Action Centre is calling for a ban on fees for paper bills and statements and made a submission to the Treasury Department.
