As the parliamentary year is about to commence, the Turnbull government will have another attempt at passing legislation to make it harder to become an official Australian citizen.
Citizenship minister Alan Tudge, says the bill is designed to ensure that applicants will have a chance to ‘seize’ great opportunities in Australia, but only if they have a basic understanding of English and are willing to become integrated with the Australian community.
Last year the legislation failed to pass through the Senate, but the government has not given up hope.
