Doomsday clock closest to midnight since the 1950s

Scientists have moved the symbolic Doomsday Clock ahead by 30 seconds, saying the world is even closer to destruction due to world leaders’ poor responses to the possibility of a nuclear war.

The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists says the clock is at its peak for the first time since 1953, due to a number of dangers such as a potential nuclear breakout from North Korea, US-Russian disputes, and South China Sea tensions.

Another major concern was what the group classified as the demise of democracy under the Trump administration, reduced to ‘name-calling’ that grants the security situation a ‘surrealistic sense of reality’.
