Children at the Brisbane Youth Detention Centre have no option but to sleep on the floor because of overcrowding, regardless of the issue being noted in an almost eight-month-old Queensland Government report, according to Together Union.
The report, based on an inspection of the Brisbane facility in February 2017, was released in July last year and summarised problems including of lack of staff, and concerns of the State Government’s plans to transfer 17-year-olds back to the youth facility.
The Department of Child Safety, Youth, and Women says it is developing plans to increase staff and improve facilities for prisoners by investing more into the centre.
