Volunteer divers have killed almost 47,000 crown-of-thorns starfish on the Great Barrier Reef in a record-breaking mission.

Similar missions have only managed to cull 30,000 crown-of-thorns starfish. The species was discovered last year eating their way through the reef.

The predatory species was so thick in some areas that they were layered on top of each other to get to the coral. The divers have welcomed the $60 million funding announcement to tackle the issue stating with more boats and divers they may be able to reduce the infestation.
