Residents of inner-city Sydney suburb Paddington have been angered after the local council poisoned a beehive, killing up to 50 000 honey bees.

Doug Purdie, of The Urban Beehive, says that the move to poison, rather than remove the hive was ‘frustrating’, and that more humane methods were readily available.

The council claims that the decision to poison the hive was based on the recommendation of pest control.
