The International Criminal Court (ICC) has opened an investigation into the President of the Philippines, Rodrigo Duterte, for alleged crimes against humanity committed during his ‘war on drugs’.

Since the police crackdown on drug dealers began nineteen months ago, approximately 4000 Filipino citizens have been killed, with many estimating the death toll to be much higher.

The ICC investigation will determine whether the Hague-based court has any jurisdiction over the atrocities committed.
