The European Parliament has criticised Egypt’s use of the death penalty, calling for all planned executions to be suspended pending review of the policy.

Since President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi came to power in a 2013 coup, there has been a sharp rise in the use of the death penalty, with 97 people being executed in the last year alone.

UN Human Rights experts have also expressed concern at the current usage of the death penalty.
