Monologues against Domestic Violence
Leading Ladies fund raise against Domestic Violence
2018 marks the 20th Anniversary of ‘The Vagina Monologues’. Based on Eve Ensler's interviews with more than 200 women, ‘The Vagina Monologues’ became a global movement to end violence against women and girls. With humour and grace, the play celebrates women and their strength.
In a new production under the direction of renowned local actress, Caroline Kennison, ‘The Vagina Monologues’ will be presented by some of Brisbane's best artists. The cast of ‘Leading Ladies’ includes Barb Lowing, Veronica Neave, Ashlee Lollback, Andrea Moor, Leah Cotterell, Penny Everingham, Jan Nary, Sally Mckenzie and Rebecca Riggs, just to name a few. All of these actresses are donating their time to present this award winning play.
Caroline Kennison says that ‘The Vagina Monologues’ is about breaking down the walls of silence that surround abuse. It’s a unique play that challenges audiences to truly listen to powerful accounts from what can be a heartbreaking, real world. “Come and see what you’ve been missing out on,” she says. "This show will make you laugh, cry, rant and pray ".
This new production at Madga's Community Artz is not only about challenging and reaching out to the audience about ending abuse. It’s also about doing something practical. The proceeds of the performances will go to local organisations that are working to stop domestic violence. These charities are Women's House, which provides support for victims, Lady Musgrave Trust, who work with young homeless women, and the National Council of Women of Qld, who work to raise awareness of women's rights.
The show comes with a language warning. “Some of the language is strong,” says Caroline Kennison, “But it’s not new or strange, and to me the expressions are no longer offensive,” she says, explaining that sometimes certain words are necessary in order to liberate, or educate.
Director Caroline Kennison says the show is for both women and men to experience together. "I invite everyone who loves women to come, hear and experience these beautiful yet challenging stories", she says. “Come and have your heart opened, your mind expanded and your embrace softened.”
‘The Vagina Monologues’ will be performed for a strictly limited season at Madga's Community Artz, 80 Boundary Road Rainworth.
Friday 16th and Saturday 17th February from 7.30-9 pm. Doors open 6.30 pm.
