The Ethiopian Prime Minister has resigned overnight, amid political turmoil and nation-wide protest.

Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn has been under the scrutiny of human rights organisations since 2015, due to the sheer number of political prisoners in Ethiopia, many of which include journalists and activists.

In recent months, Desalegn has been forced to release approximately 7000 political prisoners, and says his resignation is part of ‘the ongoing reform programmes’.
