Researchers from The Nature Conservatory and James Cook University have found Australia’s shellfish reefs are, in fact, more endangered than the Great Barrier Reef.

The study found more than 90 percent of the shellfish reefs have already disappeared, putting the remaining few in peril and leading to loss of habitat for a diverse range of species.

According to senior researcher Dr Ian McLeod, the decline is due to overfishing, a decline in water quality and invasive species.
