New Avocado Breed Could Solve Nation’s Shortage

Northern Territory Horticulturist Chris Nathaniel has high hopes his new avocado breed will be help solve Australia’s summer avocado shortages.

Australia’s most popular breed, the Schuller avocado, fruits between Mid-January and March, whereas Nathaniel’s Calypso avocado does so between December and February.

Nathaniel has been developing the plant for more than a decade and is optimistic 2018 will be the first year that the trees will be grown commercially.
