Labor has proposed a review of universities and TAFE if it secures the next federal election after concerns the two institutions should better complement each other.

Tanya Plibersek, Labor’s education and training spokesperson said the inquiry can maximise the strengths of each educational sector and also voiced concerns of the dropping student numbers to TAFE due to funding cuts and competition from private institutions.

However Liberal Education Minister Simon Birmingham said the proposal is a distraction from Labor not confirming it would make any changes to higher education.
