An audit office report has revealed a staggering $1.2 billion in unpaid fines in Queensland.

The report was overseen by auditor-general Brendan Worrall, who said the debt has grown to the point where some would need to be written off due to the lack of sufficient information surrounding the fines.

Some debts have become uneconomical for the state to pursue due to the debts being too old, the person had died or they were unable to be identified.
