The weather system dubbed ‘the beast from the east’ continues to plummet Europe and the UK into a Siberian weather pattern killing dozens of people and stalling transport networks.

After three consecutive days of snowfall, most schools across Britain and Ireland are closed and thousands of homes across the Mediterranean were left without power.

Experts suggest the cold snap is due to a ‘sudden stratospheric warming’ in the arctic that has alarmed scientists and forced some to reconsider even the most pessimistic forecasts for climate change.
