A long lived Christmas tree is finally facing the music and being taken down after gracing the Serbian capital of Belgrade for over six months.

The Mayor has defended his prolonged festival attitude, saying that Belgrade was "a European metropolis” and that they “must be competitive".

The length of the christmas tree’s stay has been steadily increasing since the Mayor, Mr Sinisa Mali, took up the office in 2014.

However the Christmas trees presence has not entirely been spreading cheer, with it becoming a symbol of suspected corruption within the councils finances.

Citizens became angry after it was revealed the prop costed the taxpayer 83,000 euros ($130,105), and the opposition alleged the tree symbolised the tip of the iceberg.

"People decide on where they want to celebrate the New Year in June, July, and not ond December 25," Mali said on the private TV channel Prva, in defence of his tree.
