The Australian Council of Trade Unions is calling for a $50 a week rise in wages to the current minimum wage, which doubles the claim from last year.
The council secretary, Sally McManus, says the pay rise is necessary following the cut to penalty rates which mainly affects those working in retail and hospitality.
Unions will rally today in Melbourne in support for the councils push for the pay rise.
