A proposal by the Greens party aims to ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2030 and to set emission standards for new cars that are in line with American and European standards.

Greens transport spokeswoman, Janet Rice, says the goal of the policy is only to have all new vehicles  electric, not to have people retire their petrol vehicles early.

The Australian Automotive Dealer Association says they welcome an increased appetite for electric cars but consumers needed to have a say.
