A mysterious purple aurora over the night skies of Canada nicknamed “Steve” has baffled scientists and physicists.

Experts who were shown photographs in a pub by amateur photographers were stumped over what the lights were and decided it needed a name, and Steve seemed as good a name as any.

Steve was backronymed, ‘Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement, and is now known to be an optical manifestation that can be seen further south than the famous Northern Lights.
