Coal from the Latrobe Valley in Victoria will be converted to liquid hydrogen and exported to Japan in a world-first trial with $50 million in backing.
The project will operate from AGL’s Loy Lang power station and will take two years to get running.
The announcement comes after months of in-fighting within the coalition over energy policy, with a group of members headed by Tony Abbott pushing for direct investment in coal-fired power.
