Saudia Arabia hosted their first ever women’s cycling race, surprising conservatives across the nation and the majority of social media.

Forty-seven women took part in the 10-kilometre race in the city of Jeddah on Tuesday, which was arranged by Be Active, an organisation aiming to create strong connections between women cyclists and local authorities.

Race organiser Nadima Abu al-Enein said she was surprised by the number of women attending the race.
