Rare Australian species could face extinction as one third of jobs are to be cut from the Environment Departments threatened species monitoring program.
The cuts come after a national review which found a majority of threatened species were not being tracked properly, however, researchers say this will be exacerbated by the job cuts.
Ecologist from the Australian National University Professor David Lindenmayer describes the cuts as "an absolute calamity for the Australian environment and for threatened species".
