Two of India’s major political parties, the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Congress party, have been criticised for promising free sanitary pads if elected for the upcoming state elections.

The promise has been made after India’s women activists voiced their outrage over the nation’s decision to place 12% tax on sanitary products in July.

Activists are not convinced by the parties’ promise, including the co-convener of the Karnataka Women’s Health Women who states that this is part of a manifesto and it is nothing to be celebrated.
