A joint parliamentary committee on Intelligence and Security have brought into question the power of Australia’s Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) to detain people for periods of up to a week.
The committee argue ASIO’s detention powers have remained unused for over 10 years, as the agency utilizes different strategies to combat terrorism.
These security policies were introduced shortly after 9/11, aiming to ensure national security while also preserving the country’s fundamental legal rights.
