A buoy in the Southern Ocean has recorded the largest wave in the southern hemisphere, reaching 23.8 metres.

According to senior oceanographer at  Metocean Tom Durrant, since the buoy was only able to record the first 20 minutes every three hours, there is a possibility that much higher waves was present.

This latest record overtook the previous, which had a height of 22.03 metres located at the south of Tasmania in 2012.
