A group of people write messages about road safety with chalk on Montague Road in West End

With a busy supermarket, growing developments, a high-frequency bus route and a childcare centre, the northern end of Montague Road has plenty going on – if you're on the right side of the bitumen.

Peak-hour commuters were met by a colourful protest action on the West End street again this week, as residents continued their years-long campaign for a safe place to cross.

Brandishing coloured chalk, high-vis vests and an invisible clown car, over 60 protesters blocked the intersection of Montague Road and Victoria Street for short intervals on Tuesday morning, filling the road surface with safety messages and a DIY zebra crossing as police held traffic at bay.

Others walked down the line of traffic, taking their message to those waiting in cars and trucks.

Greens councillor for The Gabba, Jonathan Sri – who led a similar protest in March – said the action was attempting to highlight the need for traffic lights at the notorious intersection.

"Since at least 2014 residents have been calling for this intersection to be upgraded," Sri told 4ZZZ, "there's been four large petitions to council I believe, hundreds of people have written to the Lord Mayor, but so far the council isn't taking any action."

"Residents are really frustrated, they feel like they're not being heard."
