Despite her contribution to the spy agency’s post 9/11 interrogation programme, the US senate confirmed Gina Haspel as the CIA’s first female director.
This approval came to be after a dispute between senators about the CIA’s Bush-era use of techniques such as waterboarding.
Virginia Senator Mark Warner said Ms Haspel vowed she never commit to these techniques and the agency should never resort to them.
