A block of Gold Coast holiday apartments has said guests must pay a $10 per night surcharge to rent remotes for air-conditioning.

The property manager of the apartments says they are phasing out the policy as they move onto a cheaper electricity provider.

Filmmaker Bruce Redman was checking into a holiday apartment when he spotted a laminated sign stuck to the air-conditioning unit.

Mr Redman told the ABC it was the first time he had seen a surcharge for the use of the air-conditioner at paid accommodation.
