Environmental groups have condemned the Australian government for a lack of leadership and action in combating the pollution of oceans with plastic.

The condemnation comes three years after the current national plan was declared ineffective by a federal scientific committee.

With no new plan in place, Australian Institute of Marine Science principle research scientist Frederieck Kroon said that the projections for marine plastic pollution will increase by 10% by 2025.

Kroon said that a new “threat abate plan” is crucial for coordinating the reduction of marine plastic pollution in Australia.
