South Australia will become the first state to abolish a mandatory reporting exemption for Church confessions.
New laws which will be effective in October, enforce a legal obligation to report child abuse to the police. It comes after a recommendation from the royal commission suggested the exemption be removed.
Not reporting abuses will now carry a maximum fine of up to $10,000, and follows the same rules as other social and health workers, including teachers and doctors.
