After her experiences of hunger and sickness in Kakuma refugee camp, Akon Dhel believes the chance she has in Australia is very important. While she does not remember much, her parents remind her of the long process to immigrate to Australia. Learning English in a brand new country at the age of six, she is the only member of her family to have finished high school. Akon now lives in Melbourne and works as a fundraiser for UNHCR, specifically gathering donations for the refugee camps surrounding South Sudan and other upcoming refugee crises. Akon has been inspired to help out those who are still refugees and through her work with UNHCR, she has become more passionate about using her story to make a change. With the belief that Australia can definitely do more for refugees, Akon says that they need to be more open minded about assisting refugees trying to come to Australia and their integration into society.
