The Federal Circuit Court has rejected a Tamil family’s asylum seeker appeal to prevent deportation to Sri Lanka, weeks after rural Queensland residents in Biloela lobbied the government to intervene.

Justice Caroline Kirton rejected the appeal by Priya and her eldest daughter, stating that the original assessment by the Immigration Assessment Authority had been properly conducted.

Justice Kirton added that as the family had revisited Sri Lanka three times, and as the Sri Lankan civil war ended in 2009 the family was no longer at risk from Sri Lankan authorities.

The family remains at a Melbourne Immigration Detention centre, with just 21 days to appeal the judgement.
