Peak hour speeds are dropping as population increases in the Brisbane Metropolitan area, with the average speed generally at half or worse than the posted limit.

Motorist from the outskirts are leaving earlier, particularly from Springfield who on average are leaving around six am and are still encountering traffic, an analysis by the Brisbane Times has found.

Average speeds on major roads were between four to 42 kilometres an hour slower than the posted limits. More people are driving to their jobs, up 2 per cent from 20-11 to 72 per cent.

The analysis also found that peak hour traffic times were also increasing, with the traditional 7-9 am, and 4-7 pm still being the worst hours to travel.
