A joint standing committee on Northern Australia published more than 30 recommendations on improving tourism in remote parts of Australia, including the Northern Territory, Queensland and Western Australia.

Among the recommendations, were calls to improve infrastructure and access to Kakadu National Park, as attendees to the park have dropped by more than 40,000 people since 2008.

The Gundjeihmi Aboriginal Corporation’s Chief Executive Justin O’Brien said that as mining has decreased in the area, the emphasis must be on tourism and greater infrastructure.

O’Brien added that Kakadu must be restored, as it’s iconic Australian status is similar to national treasures Uluru and the Great Barrier Reef.
