Brisbane City Council plans to up root trees at the Boondall wetlands to make room for a new environment centre, following a 20-16 election commitment from the Lord Mayor.

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk campaigned on the $5 million dollar building as the current environment centre is housed in a one-hundred-year-old building which opened twenty-years ago.

The council, in a development application, states the current facility lacks the ability to meet future demands due to the limited display space, internal meeting places for school groups and limited storage and amenities.

76 trees are listed for removal according to the application, with a further 26 to be confirmed. The council has said it will plant around three thousand five hundred plants to offset vegetation losses.
