In the first of two papers published today, two telescopes operated by international teams found a flare of high-energy gamma-rays which seemed to emanate from a known supermassive black hole, providing key information for neutrino research on earth.

Astrophysicists think the active black hole is at the centre of a foreign solar system pointed towards earth, allowing researchers to analyse material shot from it.

The papers are apart of an emerging field called neutrino astronomy which aims to detect otherwise invisible or entirely new objects from previously immeasurable sources.
