People with chronic pain and pregnant women could see their private health cover costs increase under reforms announced by the Federal Government.

Health Minister Greg Hunt announced a new tiered system of minimum hospital treatments covered by private health insurance policies, the tiers would include four bands of coverage including gold, silver, bronze and basic.

The program is designed to make it easier for consumers to know their coverage, Although Labor health spokesperson Catherine King said the plan would increase premiums for some things as certain treatment including dialysis and IVF would require top-tier coverage.
