A single mother has spoken out about the shame and humility she feels when using her cashless welfare card supplied by Centrelink.

Sylvia Asusaar is part of a group of people who say they feel ashamed when using their card, which was designed to combat problems related to alcohol and drug abuse.

They said comments on social media and in public situations criticising them as welfare recipients have increased since the card’s trial commenced earlier this year.

Asusaar is a single mother and carer for her disabled son.
