A viral hoax which claims Mars will be as large as the Moon this weekend, has been debunked.

Tomorrow morning the moon will pass through the center of Earth’s shadow for nearly two hours, making it the longest lunar eclipse of the century.

Because of the eclipse, Mars will make its closest approach to Earth since 2003, and viral articles suggested that Mars’ size will be similar to the moon.

NASA has debunked the claim, suggesting that the same hoax is rolled out every couple of years since 2003, when Mars was recorded to be the closest to Earth in modern history, at 56 million kilometres away.

For those interested in astronomy, on Saturday Mars will appear 10 times brighter to the naked eye than it did a few months ago.
