Australia is trying to reboot its troubled relations with East Timor, with Julie Bishop being the first foreign minister to visit in five years.

Following disputes about oil and gas fields in the Timor Gap, the countries' relations have deteriorated, culminating in a spying scandal when it was revealed Australia bugged East Timor's cabinet office during negotiations.

Ms Bishop said this week's talks were about "embarking on a new chapter" now a maritime boundary agreement at the UN has been signed, with annual ministerial meetings to be held.
