Tasmanian man Jake Raymond Cleaver was yesterday charged a $850 fine after trying to sell more than 30 Indigenous stone relics on Gumtree in July last year.

Cleaver’s gumtree advertisements were seen by a member of Tasmania’s Indigenous community, who alerted the authorities.

In Tasmania it’s illegal to have Indigenous relics and not inform the authorities.

Magistrate Reg Marron said in his judgement that the the state had historically had a “disgraceful” attitude towards Aboriginals and that every bit of remaining history should be protected.
