An Australian academic and human rights activist has been detained in the Philippines Manila international airport, being denied entry to the country after arriving on a flight from China.

The Bureau of Immigration recommended Professor Gill Boehringer to be blacklisted from the country, after reports he participated in a rally in November 2015, which violates an order that prohibits foreigners from engaging in political activities.

The 84 year old Boehringer is married to a Filipino woman and told Reuters that the protest accusations were “trumped up”.

Boehringer’s lawyer Maria Sol Taule is negotiating with the bureau to allow him to stay in Manila, claiming he is “medically unfit” for further travel.
