More than 700 kilos of dead fish have been pulled out of a Brisbane waterway, prompting a Brisbane City Council investigation.

The fish have been discovered floating in Forest Lake over the past few weeks, creating what residents are describing as a ‘disgusting’ environment.

Councillor Charles Strunk of Forest Lake, said the council did a number of tests on water quality with regard to the algae and the oxygen levels to make sure the environment wasn't killing the fish.

Initial reports suggest the temperature of the lake was so low the fish couldn’t survive
