A strong magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck the Northern Coast of Venezuela yesterday and shook buildings as far away as the capital, Caracas, where buildings have been evacuated.

Seismologists say it is one of the largest ever recorded earthquakes along the boundary between the Caribbean and South American plates.

The U.S. Pacific Tsunami Centre said the could cause small tsunami waves near the epicentre, close to the town of Carupano.
