Mehreen Faruqi, Australia’s first female Muslim Senator, took to the floor of the Senate to pledge to fight racism wherever she encounters it.

The new New South Wales Greens Senator said the legitimisation, normalisation and encouragement of racism and inequality in the media has made political leaders comfortable in fanning the flames of racial conflict.

In her maiden address, Faruqi (Fah roo key) also took aim at Australia’s treatment of asylum seekers, using her own experience to contrast.
