Several Ipswich fire crews this morning have returned to the scene of a large grass fire threatening many properties at Mt Walker.

More than two dozen urban and rural fire crews called on the help of water bombing and police surveillance aircrafts to bring the fire under control.

Fanned by dry south-westerly winds, the fast moving fire started about 1:30 yesterday afternoon and a spokesperson said some areas were still burning safely as of 11:30 last night.

A total fire ban remains in place for the Ipswich area.
