Europe’s largest illegal turtle and tortoise farm has been shut down on the Spanish Island of Majorca, saving 1,100 turtles and 750 eggs.
The protected species were reportedly kept in poor conditions. Authorities say the farm was set up to breed turtles on an industrial scale and the species bred there were “laundered” for sale.
Two German men and a Spanish pet shop owner in Barcelona were arrested on suspicion of running the farm. Three other people, a Spaniard and two Germans, are also under investigation.
