Former prime minister Tony Abbott has accepted an offer to become Scott Morrison’s special envoy on Indigenous affairs, and says school attendance and performance will be his major focus.
New prime minister Morrison offered Abbott the role after leaving him out of his new-look cabinet, in an effort to heal the wounds from the damaging leadership spill last week.
Abbott says he expects to be asked to make recommendations on how to improve remote area education as it is the absolute key to a better future for Indigenous kids.
