Environmental groups are appealing the use of baited hooks to the Queensland Government following the release of images showing 2 dead Hammerhead sharks attached to the hooks.

Both the Human Society International and the Australian Marine Conservation Society say the images, obtained off the coast of Magnetic Island, is proof that the government needs a new approach and new measures to prevent shark attacks.

Nicola Beynon, head of campaigns as the Human Society International, says lethal drum lines and hooking sharks are an outdated and ineffective method to protect against potential swimmer attacks, going on to say they do more harm than good.

The Society is taking legal action against the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority and the Queensland government, arguing that the drum lines go against the parks main objective to provide long term protection of the reef.
