Sexually transmitted infections have surged in Victoria and in 2017 the state recorded its highest numbers since records began in 1991, says the Department of Health and Human Services.

In ten years gonorrhoea rates rose by almost 700 per cent, chlamydia by 103 per cent and syphilis by 253 per cent.

While this rise can be linked to more testing, improved testing technology a growing population and changing sexual behaviours, says Deputy Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton.
